Here’s my standard answer to that question: Designers should be trendsetters, not trend followers.

Design trends and fads come and go. Very few clients care about them. Designers should avoid their work becoming dated, but those changes unfold over longer timeframes. Rather than following the latest trends, doing what serves that client most effectively is far more important.

You mentioned that you’re a software developer. Trends in that field are often driven by technological changes, so it might be more important to stay abreast of them. In graphic design, however, the best solution to the job at hand should guide the design, not what some random internet blogger proclaimed to be the latest thing.
