I’m curious what approaches folks prefer – software, tools, etc., e.g.:
– Wacom tablet with Photoshop and/or Illustrator (blob brush tool, pencil tool, etc.)
– iPad with Procreate / Photoshop / Illustrator
– Hand drawn sketch or photos scanned or photographed, then traced and developed in Photoshop and/or Illustrator
Whatever works the fastest. 
For illustration though, I use a Wacom and Photoshop, or I use a hand drawn sketch and scan it. I can sketch with the Wacom, but sometimes I’m someplace else with just a piece of scrap paper and a pencil, so that’s what works to get down some ideas.
For producing a (non-geometric) vector illustration that is somewhat hand-drawn looking, I wonder if people tend to prefer to start in Photoshop then export to Illustrator, or just go straight to Illustrator? I haven’t decided which makes more sense for me yet.
For that kind of thing…Illustrator being very time consuming, again, starting with a sketch helps, but the sketch has to be far more detailed, like a good inked drawing, which for me is faster in Photoshop. Illustrator Live Trace sucks though. Doing an illustration in Illustrator requires all the tools. The Variable Line tool is your friend. The Blob brush too, if your wacom can control it well enough. Mine tends to not listen to me, so I only use it for fills in fairly large areas. I use the Blob brush a lot when making vector cut paths for photoshop files sent to me for “stickers.”
