Don't Laugh - Need Advice

I’ve got a client that supplied this piece of “art” and wants me to use on a wine bottle project. The problem I’m having is that he want’s it silkscreened onto the glass, and besides being terrible… it’s a full color, color pencil drawing. Does anyone know how to convert this over to a smooth, vector illustration while maintaining the overall shape and all?

First I would explain to the client the restrictions and what can’t be done, and what you will need to do in order to make it work. I would actually do that before you do any work. Mainly just to prevent any sort of push back where they might say, I don’t want it redrawn, I want it exactly as it is. And then you need to figure out the next steps which if they do push back I would state that you can’t do it and let them find someone else.

So, with all that being said, the only solution that I can think of is that you would need to redraw and recolor this into a digital vector illustration. From what I know there is no easy button. Redrawing it might also allow you an opportunity to tweak and modify and fix any issues with the illustration.

Lastly, how prominent is this illustration. Is this a “full scale” dominant illustration. If so, you definitely need to redo and clean it up.

I also just noticed it is shaped like a C, I assume that is intentional for it to look like a C, which I assume is the name of the company or the product. If so, it’s not very obvious, potentially. Bottom line it is your job to guide and provide advice based on your expertise in order to create a solution that works for the product. If they want you to just be an “order taker” who executes their view or design I would be concerned and I would view that as problematic. Just my 2 cents.

You could try placing it in Illustrator and experimenting with the Windows > Image Trace options. However, the results won’t be satisfactory. You will need to redraw it using a vector application. In other words, the client’s cost for your time just went through the roof. Even then, it would be a four- or five-color screen printing job (why screen printing on glass instead of a label), and it still won’t look very good.

I’m laughing, but I’m laughing with you, not at you. I’ve also had clients with bad ideas and who want to rent my hands instead of my experience. They soon become my ex-clients.

As @CraigB said, “Bottom line it is your job to guide and provide advice based on your expertise in order to create a solution that works for the product. If they want you to just be an “order taker” who executes their view or design I would be concerned and I would view that as problematic.”

You could try using:

But you’ll need to buy it to try it, and depending on the original art, even that may not turn out acceptable…
And by the looks of it, NOT…
