Has anyone else run into issues where the Equal Housing Lender logo has to be shown ridiculously large in comparison to the rest of the ad content? I’m looking for a loophole so this doesn’t ruin all my design moving forward.
On the gov site (once you get passed all their BS shutdown nonsense) comes in all different png sizes. Where are you seeing that it has to be a certain size?
Not so much a certain size, but a certain proportion.
From the compliance department of my client (a bank):
“Since different people may have different ideas on what is legible or clearly readable or what is prominently shown, we need to have a ‘standard’ for sizing. For example, the words “Equal Housing” under the ‘doghouse’ should not be smaller than the smallest print being used elsewhere in the Ad. Additionally, it should never be of a size smaller than the smallest font that would be used for other important or necessary pieces of information. For example, if the Bank or MLO’s telephone number, email address or website address would not be in a font size equal to how ‘Equal Housing’ is showing up based on the EHL logo size, then the wording “Equal Housing” under the ‘doghouse’ also should not be that small. This really is not so much about print quality, but a size that makes the words readable.”
If “Equal Housing” is to be no smaller than the phone number of the lender featured in the ad, then the EHL logo is going to be very large and a distraction from the main message of the ad, IMO.
Ahh ok. I see what you are saying now. I’m not sure how you would approach that if that is what they are requiring. Maybe do a mock up and show them. See if they really want it that big. Otherwise maybe someone else has some suggestions. Good luck ![]()
They apparently feel it’s important not to downplay the logo, so, depending on the circumstances, you might create two different versions: one with the ridiculously large logo and one that you feel meets their concerns about visibility without making the ad look stupid.
As you suggested, if you want their phone number to be 18-point type, it seems a bit silly to make the smallest line of type in the logo that size. Imagine if you used a 72-point headline, would they really want the smallest type in the logo to also be 72 points?
Unless they’re by-the-book, letter-of-the-law knuckleheads rather than normal people with a modicum of common sense, they will probably understand the problem. If not, let them choose the pointlessly ugly one and be done with it. It’s not as though a bank ad would be a portfolio piece anyway.
Thanks for the input. I just wanted to make sure I’m not missing anything.
