How to design shapes in the composition?

I often design a poster or any social media post with basically these three elements -

  1. Type
  2. Image of the subject
  3. Design elements/shapes

I happen to do many trial-n-error attempts to design the design-elements or shapes so that they look relevant to the composition, and not just like they have been put randomly - thus making the design look weird and clumsy. I often find my mind to shut down during the elements design and introducing shapes to my composition.

How can I get over this problem?

just remember the rules of thirds, spatial arrangement and hierarchy you would get through any design. The aim is to make the design legible and immediately convey meaning, aesthetics is added value…

Empty space is also a shape. It needs to be considered just as much as any of the graphic elements in your layout.
