How to make the type work well with the mark in a combination mark logo?

I was wondering how to create harmony between the mark and the type. Are there any guidelines for this?

THANKS in advance!

Three rules of thumb (that I just made up):

The type shouldn’t compete for attention with the mark, and should be subordinate to it (unless, of course, it’s a wordmark).

The type should have a similar personality or, probably more often, a neutral personality that will take on the personality of the mark.

Quirky typefaces or faces that draw attention to themselves rarely work unless they’re used as wordmarks.
