How were the spaces between the soild shapes kept equal?

Recently I was trying to create(copy it, as stated in the book Steal Like an Artist) this logo:

in order to improve my skills. I wonder how has the spacing between the solid shapes or arcs been kept equal.

The common methods for making such patterns, Blend and Offset Path, create even spacing inherently.
