I built a free Mockup Generator for designers!

Hi everyone,

I’ve been working on a side project called Mockupgen — a free mockup generator for designers and print-on-demand sellers.

I noticed that many mockup tools are either complicated to use or locked behind paywalls, so I wanted to create something simple, fast, and free for designers. Right now, we only have T-shirt mockups, but more categories are coming soon!

With this tool, you can choose a model, upload your design, customize it, and download for free — no signup required, and unlimited downloads.

I’d love to hear your thoughts — what works, what could be improved, or any ideas to make it even better for designers like you.

You can find the link of the Mockup generator on my profile.

Thanks so much for taking a look!

Seems you’re demoing a can opener at a chefs’ convention, as most of us are seasoned graphic designers who’ve been generating mockups for years, often creating custom solutions tailored to each project. Personally, I use a mix of Photoshop, Illustrator, and sometimes even InDesign when needed. There’s no shortage of control when doing it yourself, especially when you want to get everything pixel-perfect.

That said, I can absolutely see the value of something like Mockupgen for newer designers or for those in a hurry who need a clean, quick output without all the technical fuss. A fast, no-signup, no-paywall tool is refreshing in a sea of overcomplicated or locked-down platforms. And I like that you’re starting with T-shirt mockups that’s a massive use case for freelancers and print-on-demand sellers.

Still, it’s worth noting that most print-on-demand services like Printful or Redbubble already include built-in mockup previews. So for people working within those ecosystems, there’s often no real need to look elsewhere. And when you’re working professionally, you often want more control over lighting, perspective, and branding elements which is why tools like Boxshot or Origami come into play, especially for packaging or more complex presentations.

But fair play to you for putting something out there. If it keeps evolving, adds more product types, and lets users tweak things beyond the basics, I could definitely see it being bookmarked as a quick mockup solution. Keep pushing it forward and maybe think about adding flat lays, lifestyle scenes, or layered PSD exports down the line.

Who knows, if you pitch it to the right crowd as an API or offer a white-label solution, you might end up making more from the backend than from the front-facing tool itself. Plenty of platforms out there are crying out for something quick, clean and embeddable. Even just offering it as a plug-in for Shopify or Etsy sellers could open doors. Not every user wants to wrestle with design software, so if you can make it effortless and brandable for them, you’re in a strong position.

Good luck with the project.

Thank you so much @Smurf2 for your detailed feedback!

I really appreciate the time you took to share your thoughts. you’re clearly a source of knowledge and experience, and your advice is incredibly helpful.

You’re absolutely right about the need for more flexibility and categories, and I’ll definitely keep building on this adding more mockup types, lifestyle scenes, and useful features along the way.

Thanks again for the encouragement and insights!

My comments:

  • I could see this being useful — even more so as the library gets built out.
  • I tried uploading an AI file which didn’t seem to take. It would be nice if I could upload vector art.
  • I uploaded a PNG logo and then downloaded the image. The PNG was a little rough when blown up. See attached screen shot.
  • I’m not sure what the wrap intensity did. Maybe on other mockups it will be more useful.
  • It would be nice if I could change the background color.
  • I understand black t-shirts can’t be totally black, but I’d like to see them a bit more black than they currently appear.
  • Better be careful with images of famous people (i.e. Steve Jobs).

Thank you so much @Steve_O for taking the time to test Mockupgen and share such detailed feedback!

You’re absolutely right the product is still in its early phase, and it’s far from perfect. I really appreciate you pointing out these issues. These are all valuable insights that I’ll be working on improving.

And yes, you’re right about being cautious with famous personalities. I’ll make sure to keep that in mind.

Thanks again for your time and constructive feedback. Every suggestion like this helps me make Mockupgen better for everyone.

Absolutely superb response and I couldn’t agree more.
