These are really cute. But this is an ancient art. I wrote my dissertation partly on this subject many years ago. There are some amazing pieces of art from thousands of years ago. The artform is called Zoomorphic Calligraphy. It was born because the depiction of faces, humans, and any living thing in many islamic areas was banned, because it was believed to lead to worship of icons (think Mother of Jesus Mary, Zeus statues, etc.) To get around this artists used words to create shapes of animals to illustrate their books.
