My immediate response on reading your post is that your whole question is missing the point.
You don’t need a logo. You need a brand identity.
If you’re looking for a designer to ‘design a logo’ for a ‘little extra cash’, you are going to get the solution you pay for. In such a saturated market as clothing brands, someone who will do you a logo is going to leave you pecking around for scraps in a market that has some very sleek players already in the game.
You need to find a designer who can help identify your target market (if you haven’t already) and talk to them in the right tone of voice. If you are wise, that market will also be a fairly narrow, specific one. To break into general clothing markets, you are going to need a good few zeros in your marketing budget to get anywhere near being noticed.
Of course, all this is going to cost more than the cousin of a neighbour who was ‘good at art’ in school and will do you a logo for $50, but the question is, do you want your business to succeed?
I think Sprout makes a fair point about the difference between just getting a logo and building a proper brand identity. That said, I can also understand where you’re coming from, Nathan. Sometimes you just need to get things moving with a basic design if you’re early-stage or testing the waters.
Maybe a good middle ground is to find a designer who can give you a clean, scalable logo now, but also help set the foundation for a more complete brand identity later as your budget and direction grow. Just something to think about, depending on where you’re at in the process.
