Movies with interesting photography/design

What movies do you recommend for graphic designers?

I found these appealing:

Life of Pi 2012

Lawrence of Arabia 1962

The Tree of Life 2011

2001: A Space Odyssey 1968

Schindler’s List 1993

Sin City 2005

Any movie by Wes Anderson.

I always look forward to seeing the use of typography in Wes Anderson movies.

In Life Aquatic, the scene that always kills me is when Steve Zissou tells Ned that he is ordering stationery for him, and that’s the way he lets Ned know that he accepts him as his son and as a member of Team Zissou.

I would have included 2001: A Space Odyssey and Laurence of Arabia at the top of my list, but I’ll leave them out since Joe already mentioned them. Here are some older movies with some amazing visuals.

^ Metropolis — it’s from 1927, but for its time, it was brilliant

^ Citizen Kane — Another oldie, Citizen Kane from 1941

^ Days of Heaven — One of Richard Gere’s first movies from 1978

^ Bladerunner 2049 — Amazing visuals from 2017

^ The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly — A spaghetti western from 1967

^ Apocalypse Now — 1979

^ Barry Lindon — 1975

Bladerunner, Metropolis and Mank (the “Citizen Kane” shot) had been on my list too.
I’ll have to watch all of the movies in this thread (again).

2001: A Space Odyssey immediately comes to mind. But then I had to dig deep for others and some movies I loved but forgot about.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford — amazing movie

Lawrence of Arabia another classic.

Raging Bull.

So many - but some here I haven’t heard of so this will help movie night.

P.S. Metropolis is one of my favourite movies.

And I seem to be recalling Brazil - 1985. Another absolute classic.

This is a fabulous list. Here are a few of my favorites.

What Dreams May Come - 1998

Melancholia - 2011

Pan’s Labyrinth - 2006

The Last of the Mohicans - 1992

The Last of the Mohicans

I’m still a bit salty that NONE of it was filmed here in Upstate NY where the story takes place. But, I get it. The historical areas were too overdeveloped. The Blue Ridge Mountains did provide a stunning backdrop regardless

A lot of good movies already on the list, I would add:

The Fall (2006)

The Fifth Element (1997)

But I agree with pretty much all Wes Anderson’s films and Metropolis

The Book of Life (2014)

is criminally underrated. Sure, it is a kids movie, and many people compare it to Pixar’s Coco which came out 3 years after it. But IMO it is so much better than Coco and visually more unique.

Great list, Joe! These are all visually powerful films. I’d also recommend Blade Runner 2049 and The Grand Budapest Hotel** — both are incredible for color, composition, and creative inspiration.

The new Frankenstein movie coming out on Netflix looks interesting.

It’s out already here - I already watched it - it was good. Nothing blowing me away at the moment.

I really like Mickey 17, Mark Ruffalo is brilliant in it - not sure it’s interesting photography/design - but it has some decent visuals.

I’m really interested in seeing The Phoenician Scheme - but I need my head space to be right, a quiet house, me, in a room, by myself, lights down, no distractions.

I like ‘me’ movies. But I need the time and space and frame of mind.

Grand Budapest Hotel, Asteroid City, Punch Drunk Love, Donnie Darko, The Lobster, Tusk, etc. - weird films feel like they’re made just for me so I feel like I have to watch them by myself.

Anyone else like that? Just me?

I also watched the new Frankenstein movie. The visuals, mood, and atmosphere are stunning.

However, even though I only saw it three or four days ago, I haven’t thought of it since then. I can’t even remember how it ended. I’m growing a bit tired of big, colossal movies built around special effects that overshadow the story.

I’m the exact same i don’t remember the ending. How weird
