this is my first post on this forum.
First I want to say that I’m beginner in world of graphic design and I’m in process of creating my own/first logo. I have created two versions and don’t know which one to use. Only difference is that second version don’t have that square behind it. I like first one more, but some voice deep inside of me tells me that second is better. Please help lol. 
The second one would be easier to reproduce in a wider variety of media.

If it were me, I’d thicken up those outlines. Reduce the logo down to typical business card size or, even further to a website favicon, and they’ll get so thin as to be difficult to reproduce or see. Besides, I think it would just look better — especially when you’re in a situation where you only have black to work with and need to print the outlines by themselves.
I do agree the second composition is the best one. It’s simpler, more straight-forward and doesn’t have the background competing with it for attention.
2nd one … lose the lines open up the segments and strengthen the type.
That would work well too.
