SEO & Digital Marketing Tips for Graphic Designs

Hi, everyone!

I’m part of a digital marketing agency called Adam Innovations (www.adaminnovations.in), where we focus on helping businesses, including creative agencies like graphic design firms, optimize their online presence. As we work closely with many graphic design professionals, one of the challenges we see frequently is how to stand out in a saturated market.

I wanted to open a discussion on how graphic design agencies can leverage SEO and digital marketing strategies to not only improve their online visibility but also attract the right clients. Specifically:

  • SEO for Design Portfolios: What are the best practices for optimizing a design portfolio or website for search engines?
  • Content Marketing: How can graphic designers use blogs, case studies, and other content to showcase their work and expertise?
  • Social Media & Online Advertising: How can graphic designers make the most of platforms like Instagram and Pinterest for attracting clients while integrating them into an overall marketing strategy?

Looking forward to hearing your insights and experiences. Let’s share some tips on building an effective digital marketing strategy for graphic design agencies!

Best,

Here’s a list of SEO tips from Gerrid Smith, the owner of the Fortress agency, that applies to any business.

Till date for portfolios make sure your site loads quickly and is mobile friendly. Wrong keywords in your design descriptions hurt your SEO. Good for showing your expertise are content, case studies and design tips. For graphic designers in particular, Instagram and Pinterest are an important form of social to demonstrate your work and link traffic to your website.

Instagram and Pinterest? They’re just adjuncts. Well, maybe Instagram. Pinterest, not so much.
I wouldn’t rely on either of them to drive business to your site. Of all the designers I work with, all have a proprietary main website, usually a Facebook site, and least likely, an Instagram site.

And no mention of TikTok? LOL! I guess not everyone can be an ‘influencer.’

Where the OP started this as an advertisement, I’m kinda surprised it’s still here.

Others’ experiences might differ, but I don’t think digital marketing and social media are primary means of attracting graphic design clients. Social media is great for getting likes and followers from other designers, but they’re my competitors, not potential clients.

Over the past 30 years, I have known only two clients who said they first found me via a web search. Most of my clients have arrived via word of mouth or from me reaching out to them. I doubt any serious, well-funded clients look for graphic designers on Facebook, Instagram, X, or similar. LinkedIn might pay off if one puts enough effort into writing posts and connecting with the right set of potential clients.

Most of my clients have looked up my website over the years, but that’s only after they’ve found me via other methods and decided to check out what I’ve done.

As for SEO, yes, a solid, professional, well-written, and well-structured website is important — not only for SEO purposes but for potential clients checking into you. However, as I mentioned in 30 years, I know of only two clients who first found me via a web search. Instead, they get referred to me by various acquaintances and former or existing clients who subsequently searched the web for me before contacting me.

If I go to Google and search for graphic designers in my area, the first five pages are littered with sponsored content from crowdsourcing sites and various paid graphic designer aggregate sites. If I go to Google’s business listings for graphic designers, I’m on the first page, but I doubt many potential clients even make it that far.
