The American Revolution

I just finished watching the new Ken Burns’ documentary series titled The American Revolution on PBS.

It might not be for everyone, but I thought it was outstanding. In addition to what most Americans are taught in school, the series delves into the chaos of the war involving loyalists, rebels, aristocracy, the British, slaves, native Americans, and even German and French soldiers.

The series portrays it both as a revolution against British rule and a terribly brutal civil war. How the 13 colonies didn’t devolve into anarchy after the British left seems like something of a miracle. The old paintings, maps, and other artwork that comprise most of the visuals must have taken years to find and obtain the rights to use.

I haven’t seen any of this yet. It’s going on my ever growing list

I’ve read biographies on Washington, Franklin and Hancock this year and that started me down the rabbit hole. I’m halfway through the first episode and looking forward to the rest.
