Countering the world is getting better graphics are, of course, the straight-up, hockey stick curves showing unsustainable world population growth, increasing atmospheric CO2 levels (climate change), environmental degradation, and species extinction rates. And I haven’t even mentioned nuclear weapon proliferation or the looming possibility of a sudden world-wide pandemic from some new virus or antibiotic-resistant lethal disease.
There are lots of reasons to be optimistic, but there are also some huge challenges.

Also should note that “things getting better” takes into account worldwide poverty statistics. In the US we have been declining in education, health, new business growth, standard of living and disposable income for 30+ years.
