Using modernist art for album cover

A client is really into these Audubon flower paintings, and wants to use them for his record cover. Does anyone know about getting rights to use old paintings on album covers?

Thanks.

If they were painted by John Audubon, enough time has elapsed for them to be in the public domain. However, photographs of those images are arguably copyrighted by the photographer. Newer work the Audubon Society has commissioned is still under copyright protection. The surest way to know is to contact the Audubon Society.
