Anybody uses version control software for their design work?

I used a version control software for sharing assets in a software company back in 2000. That’s the only time. I can’t remember the name of it. All I remember is that it consolidated all the assets in one file and stamped it with a date. I didn’t understand what else it did for all the other users.
