Hey there! Julio Herrera here—a software engineer and cultural enthusiast living in Via dei Vellutini, Italy. Which free or affordable tools are recommended for designing basic business logos and graphics without advanced design skills or for beginners?
Please provide a list that can be easily accessible and helpful.
Beginners shouldn’t design logos for businesses. That’s like someone asking what free tools are available for dentistry by beginners with no advanced skills.
On the other hand, if you’re just messing around for fun, GIMP (raster) and Inkscape (vector) are free. If you’re a serious student, you should learn to use serious professional tools, such as Adobe software or the more affordable but capable Affinity suite of software.
I’m into different profession, so just wanted to know if I can learn any basic tool for my personal use.
So you’re NOT a Graphic Designer and no knowledge of Art or Design at all.
But you want something to make logos with.
I don’t think we have a sub-forum for Used Car Salesmen…
Logos often require Trademarks ® or Service Marks (SM) or (™). If you dare to use unknown or generic logos you could find yourself in a very costly Copyright Infringement suit. That’s another reason why hiring a professional designer to do the work is far better and well worth the hassle, risk, and investment.
I also recommend Inkscape and GIMP, though if you want to pursue graphic design as a career, you should go for Adobe software, which is the industry standard for photo editing (Photoshop), vector graphics editing (Illustrator) and desktop publishing (InDesign).
A logo is just one element of a brand identity system, which consists of many different elements, such as:
- visual patterns;
- typography;
- icons;
- a website + social media profiles;
- physical and digital ads (billboards, banners);
- flyers, brochures, catalogs,
- stationery;
- gadgets;
- signage;
- packaging;
- car wrapping;
As a graphic designer, you should create not just logos, but comprehensive visual identity systems.
Okay, thanks for the necessary information regarding copyrighting @PopsD , I will hire a designer for my work.
@Jakub_Trybowski I tried to learn Photoshop by watching a YouTube video, but it’s not that easy. Thank you for the help.
Photoshop isn’t the right tool for logos if that’s what you had in mind. Logos are built in vector software, such as Adobe Illustrator. No professional-level graphics software is easy to learn. You won’t find GIMP or Inkscape any easier to learn.
Smart choice, Sir.
