Hi, I am new here. I am from Malaysia residing in Calgary, Canada for good. I was operating a brand and graphic design agency for the last two decades before moving to Canada. Now, I am planning to restart my new agency here in Calgary. I found this group is so supportive and informative and I have a lot of things would like to learn from you.
Welcome Aboard!
Thank you Kittie.
I’m glad you found us, so welcome to the forum. After you’ve settled in a bit, maybe you can tell us about the differences between graphic design in Malaysia and Canada.
Welcome to the forum Fiona.
Echoing Just-B’s comment, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the differences between graphic design in Malaysia and Canada! Welcome!
Certainly! I think I should be able to share more after my business in Canada kick off.
For this moment, I can tell about Malaysia, that we always got undervalued by the clients. There are a lot of problems there that can’t be changed because the design agencies there always in price war and do not practice good culture. Hence, things like service contract, written confirmation, maximum revision, payment upfront, maximum options on design, surcharge for project beyond the estimate duration and so on doest not work at all. I have brochures that dragged for a year, real estate branding project that dragged for 3 years and still hope us to follow the old estimate. I have bunch of proposals that we spent months to prepare called off because they do not have budget eventually. They always asked us to get ready proposals for them to tender in meetings even with government ( we did a lot of government projects). In a nut shell, the medium sized agencies normally won’t survived well ( I was exceptional as I was brave enough to fight and diversify)
Hence, you either go big or stay tiny to survive but not get rich.
