Good news! Our forecast high for Friday has tripled. It’s supposed to be a balmy 6°F, now.
Here it’s sticking around 0 Celsius, goes a couple up and then a couple down.
So cold
The forecast for Christmas Day here in Los Angeles is a high of 83.
In my entire life, I’ve never seen snow falling, and I’ve only been in snow once. I was a teenager and our church youth group went up into the mountains for a day. There was about a foot of it on the ground. But that’s it. I’m honestly fascinated by this thread, and have no idea how some of you can function in all that cold and snow.
Bah, humbug!
While I live in an area that has four distinct seasons, 6° for a daytime high is unusual for my area and definitely on the brutal side. That said, I like the change in seasons and even winter isn’t without its charms. The cold temps are kind of nice around Christmas and New Year, but once we get past the holidays, I’m ready for spring – which makes January, February, and most of March seem to drag on. My wife and I lived in the Phoenix area for a bit. There are times in the middle of winter that I wonder why we moved back to the Midwest, but I’m glad we did … most of the time.
I’m in the Upstate NY region on the edge of the Adirondacks… but still 3 hours from the Canadian border. We do not get lake effect snow. But, we can have some doozies that last for a couple days. We can easily get 3 feet in some storms. But, that is happening less frequently lately. Our temps are most brutal in Jan, Feb and March. December for the most part is the mildest part of winter. So far this December we are running an average of 35 - 40F for a high every day.
As for how we deal with the snow…
Seriously though … it gets dealt with pretty quickly and rarely do people get “snowed in” There might be a couple hour of delay or schools get closed for the day. That’s about it.
Life in the Northeast is always a weather adventure
… and people really do rush and buy out the bread, milk and eggs. They always have. I do not
Wow, that is pretty much spot on! The only thing you might add is 8.5 Play in the snow (make snowman, make snow angle, sled) with the kids / grand kids / dog (as applicable). We don’t have a dog anymore, but all of the dogs we’ve had have loved the snow.
The French toast run is a very real thing. Funny thing about it is this: I am convinced that if my wife and I were suddenly unable to go to the grocery store that we could eat for at least a week with the food that we currently have in our fridges, freezers, and pantry. Granted, there wouldn’t be a lot of fresh vegetables and fruit at the end of the week, but neither would we be going all Donner party on each other.
The silly thing is the French Toast run even happens here in Dallas, where we might get 4-6" if it is a “significant” winter storm event. And even then it usually melts within a few days.
Currently it is 51°F here, but the arctic air is supposed to hit Thursday with 30-40mph wind gusts and drop us down to somewhere around 10°F, but by the day after Christmas we are suppose to be back to 50°F and sunny.
That’s the way I prefer to experience cold weather. Short lived. Heck, at the moment Dec. 29 is forecast to be a high of 67°F and sunny.
LOL … No playing in the snow anymore for me But, yes … that would definitely be part of it if you have kidlettes and doggos.
I could easily go a couple weeks if necessary. As you say fresh things would gone quickly. But, I have enough pasta, rice, beans and freezer goods to feed us well for a bit
I find that surprising. I really had no idea it happened in other places. I thought it was regulated to this side of the country
Like I said, it’s “sillier” to me in Dallas since the winter “storms” are much less impactful and much shorter lived. People act like they are going to be holed up for weeks. The reality is you might be holed up for a day or two at most.
I really dislike snow.
That’s not entirely true, I love it for about 15 minutes, then I despise it. Thankfully, if we are unlucky, we’ll get a couple of days a year and usually no thicker than a few inches deep and even that fills me with dread.
More accurately, I hate cold. We have just had 10 days of it being unseasonably cold. There was ice and frost, but no snow. We are now back to normal for this area. Mildish and wetish. I can deal with that. You can get on with life.
The problem is, the UK is notoriously rubbish at dealing with any sort of extremes in weather. If there is going to be a cold snap, the council will grit main roads, but that’s about it. Other than that, you just wait until it warms up a bit. The infrastructure isn’t there because, in the main, we don’t need it. So, on the odd occasion it does happen, we all just moan about the government!
Thankfully, apart from a ‘big shop’ once or twice a month, I don’t really need to go anywhere. There’s a twice weekly food market here and a couple of walkable shops. Plus, there are two pubs within a two minute walk, which is all the storm contingency planning you need!
The best kind of snow, for me, was when I was in Italy. I was 20 minutes from the coast (8km as the crow flies, but 16 by road), but it rose 650m in that distance. On the coast; balmy all winter, but by us, because of the altitude, it could get wintery as soon as the sun went down, so sometimes, overnight you would get a foot or two of snow. Absolutely beautiful, but as soon as the sun came up, it would usually all be gone by lunchtime. Rarely did it last more than a day or two.
If I went another 15 minutes up, there was snow all winter.
I remember having a friend come and stay one November. It snowed overnight. By lunch we were on the balcony in the sun, in T-shirts having a cold beer. After lunch, we went up to the snow to play, but you could see right down to the coast and there were people on the beach in swimwear. Very surreal. That’s my kind of winter. The kind you can ‘switch off’ again with a 20 minute drive!
There’s not a lot of winter swimwear, or even T-shirts going on in this part of the world! Still, I can’t moan, it is very beautiful, whatever the weather – apart from 16 minutes after a snowfall, of course!
Today. Warmish and wetish.
This just came up in my feed … given our conversation I thought it a must share
The only thing they forgot was the eggs
This is my all time favorite “bread and milk”
When I was in college I worked in the bake shop of a grocery store. A snow storm would literally wipe out all three aisles. People would wait while we ‘finished’ the pre-baked stuff we had, after all the long-bake stuff was gone. Some would even buy the par-baked stuff to finish at home.
One night, I did have one guy insist I go in the cooler and get him some eggs though. A bake shop has to have eggs, right? (Not this one, everything started as bag mix or frozen dough.) He got downright dangerous with his threats. When he started to climb the counter, security finally showed up and took him away. We had a good laugh after.
I’ve often wondered what goes on in a persons head that makes them feel that violent … over something so trivial. Do they really think whatever their end game is will get them eggs?
I know it was a while back… but you see more and more of these unstable people running amuck nowdays. When my niece left one of our major grocery stores for a better job I was so relieved. The stories she would tell were scary and heartbreaking. These folks don’t sign up to be abused so badly.
Some people need to be very ashamed of themselves.
As for weather conditions right now. Temp is dropping and there are warnings all over about the bitter temps and road conditions. I don’t think we are in line for the major snow, but it’s supposed to rain and that’s going to make everything a nice skating rink.
btw … That video and the outside dining during the pandemic are my favorite Vic videos
Wow, Steve_O, 6 degrees is twice as good as we will get here tomorrow in Kentucky (3 degrees). Time to break out the swimsuit!
Kittie, I love your bread, milk, and T-P illustration. So true in my area!
A high of 2 does not sound fun.
