RIP: The Necrology Thread

He was a complete legend. A friend of mine published his book a couple of years ago and said of him, ‘He was a joy to work with. Humble, generous & always smiling.’ I am genuinely saddened by his passing – far too early. He still had so much to say. I’d loved to have heard what a sage version of Benjamin Zephaniah was like.

RIP Shane MacGowan - died 30 November

I couldn’t bring myself to make this post - Shane MacGowan was a legend and once again say goodbye to another Irish legend this year.

Sally MacLennane
Pair of Brown Eyes
Sick Bed of Cuchullan
Irish Rover
Dirty Old Town

Just some of my favourite hits

And of course the ever famous Fairytale of New York

Here’s Glen Hansard and The Pogues with Lisa O’Neill singing at the Funeral

My band are doing a gig on the 23rd and we have been rehearsing a few Christmas songs to drop in towards the end of the second set. Fairytale of New York is one of them – why wouldn’t it be?! Rehearsal this week was pretty poignant.

This one hurts. I loved his radio shows.

Denny Laine, 79, co-founder of The Moody Blues and Wings (along with Paul McCartney), died on Dec. 5 from ongoing lung complications stemming from a 2022 bout of Covid.

I know this was three weeks ago, but I only read about it yesterday.

I’m just seeing that Tom Smothers of the Smothers Brothers has passed at 86 :frowning: The Smothers Brothers were extremely funny and extremely controversial. They didn’t care whose delicate toes they stepped on. They rocked the political establishment and made the 1960’s TV Censors VERY nervous.
RIP Tommy

Thanks for sharing. That was interesting. I didn’t know too much about them.

Wayne Kramer of the MC5 - one of the greats, a true innovator

I’ve never heard of this group or him or this song. It’s funny when you get to the age when you think you have heard/seen it all for the most part and up pops something totally new.

RIP to him

Like RedKittieKat, I had never heard of MC5 until now, which is a little weird since this is exactly the type of music I listened to as a kid. I looked them up, and Wikipedia has an extensive article on them that quotes sources saying they were one of the best rock bands of all time and extremely influential. Huh! Maybe so, but I must have been living with my head in the sand.

They are possibly best known for ‘Kick Out The Jams’ - ahead of their time in many ways.

This is recorded live in 1969 (!) and there’s a swear word right at the beginning;

I know Carl Weathers from Arrested Development. I did not realize he was in the NFL.

Russia’s well-known and influential Putin opposition leader, Alexei Navalny, dies suddenly in a Russian penal colony.

I greatly admired this man. After Putin first tried to kill him with a nerve agent, Navalny voluntarily returned to Russia, where he was promptly arrested and sentenced to years in prison.

I feel bad for this guy :frowning:

At least he wasn’t near a window. That seems to be the preference of that regime.
