RIP: The Necrology Thread

I had no idea Doris Day was still alive. Most people just don’t make it to 97.

I’m surprised no one has mentioned Peggy Lipton of the Mod Squad and Twin Peaks. She died a couple of days ago at 72.

Aw geez. For me as a kid, he and Harvey Korman were the very face of comedy.

He was a comedic genius. To watch him try to make Harvey Korman or Carol Burnett break character was hysterical

I. M. Pei, who began his long career designing buildings for a New York real estate developer and ended it as one of the most revered architects in the world, died early Thursday at his home in Manhattan. He was 102.

It was the most advanced piece of race kit of its day, but by today’s standards, the Ferrari 312T was effectively a 650 bhp wheeled aluminum bucket. Wrestling the primitive powerhouse to the 1975 International Cup for F1 Manufacturers required an athlete who was also the first of a kind. Genius-lunatic Niki Lauda captured 5 race victories that season to take the first of his 3 World Driving titles. Lauda would go on to become one of the most storied drivers in racing history, a pioneer of ethics and safety in the sport, owner of his own airline, and non-executive chairman of the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team.

Rest In Peace, “Little Rat”

In case you missed it… Gloria Vanderbilt has passed at 95. Folks seem more shocked that she was Anderson Cooper’s Mother and forget that she was part of the “Trial of the Century” in the 30’s. She was often referred to as the “Poor little rich girl” She was heir to the Vanderbilt fortune and had a trust fund worth millions. After her father died, her aunt took the mother to court for custody over Gloria’s trust fund. She accused the mother of being a lesbian and too sinful and unfit to bring up the little girl. She won. In the 80’s she had to pay back millions in taxes that her lawyers never paid. She sued them and won … but never recovered the money. Gloria will probably be best known for her fashion empire. She was also a wife many times, a mother, artist, author, actress and of course, heiress, and socialite. RIP Gloria.

Interesting. I didn’t know much about this story – including that she was the Vanderbilt jeans designer or that she was Anderson Cooper’s mom. I was just perusing the news and saw a story that he doesn’t expect to inherit her fortune.

I listened to a lengthy podcast interview with Anderson Cooper a couple of years ago. He talked quite a bit about his mother’s upbringing in an extremely wealthy, famous and highly dysfunctional family and how it affected her.

He also talked about the suicide of his brother and death of his father when he was much younger. He alluded to the problems he has faced and how he’s coped with the lasting effects of his unusual childhood and having a mother who was dealing with serious issues of her own.

I heard an interview with him a while back as well. Something about he doubted he would ever see much of an inheritance. She spoke many times that she was not leaving anyone anything … so who knows. Either way … another case of money breeding contempt I think.

Much like the whole Mommy Dearest debacle. Joan Crawford never left a dime to the children she mentally and physically abused.

I believe Cooper’s relationship with her was strained at best. But, he never spoke too harshly of her. (from what I remember anyway)

Honestly, I can’t remember if I heard this directly from Warren Buffett’s mouth or if I heard this about him – so take it with a grain of salt. Anyway, I heard him say, or heard it said of him, that he wanted to leave his kids enough to do something but not so much they could do nothing. That seems like a pretty good philosophy.

Rip Torn has passed at 88 :frowning: I’ve watched him in so many things for decades. He always played such great characters. He started acting in the 50’s. I first remember him as Nathan Bryce in The Man Who Fell To Earth. There have been so many movies and TV shows … but playing Zed in Men in Black was always a fav of mine. And who can forget that time Karen almost cheated on Stan with Lionel on Will and Grace. RIP Mr. Torn … you had a long and wonderful career. You will be missed.

I’ve heard of Rip Torn, but I would not have recognized a photo of him. I just looked through his IMBd entry thinking I’d refresh my memory., Amazingly, I’ve never seen a single thing he’s acted in — not one. Weird!
