What'cha Watchin'? (Possible Spoilers)

Not been watching a lot of TV, but last night I stumbled upon an episode of NOVA on PBS A to Z: The First Alphabet, about the beginning and evolution of the written languages from different cultures.

It was quite fascinating to realize that there were more similarities than differences among the world’s “First Nations”.

Started watching ‘Them’ on Amazon Prime. It’s really really good.
It’s supernatural side to it - but it makes you think if it is or they just gone cray-cray.

Highly recommend.

I am psyched. Terriers is on Hulu. It’s a fun, buddy-cop, dramedy sort of series. Not too long of a series, so it’s not a big commitment.

Plus, it has one of the best theme songs ever.

Another recommendation. Check out The Kominsky Method on Netflix.

When I am not watching new episodes of Cat Fish…I watch Netflix Top Rated Movies and TV shows. I am definitely a binge watcher though. Currently, I am watching Lupin. https://youtu.be/ga0iTWXCGa0

Nice! I watched the first couple seasons, need to get back into it now that they’ve brought God into it, ha.

I’ve been watching Queen’s Gambit, Schitts Creek, and Orphan Black lately. Then I’m a big whovian so of course sprinkle in some Doctor Who (: (pre writer’s change, Chris Chibnall has done a horrible job)

Don’t get me started on Doctor Who … I adore it and watched it several times over. Just wondering when we will ever get a new season

Where are you seeing Dr. Who? All I’ve ever managed to find are sporadic, years-old episodes. I thought the UK was holding it over their former colonies’ heads as 240-year-old retribution of some kind.

This reminds me of an old British Airways ad campaign (mid-70s?) with Robert Morley as spokesman: “Come home. All is forgiven.”

No, we just don’t want that kind of technology falling into the wrong hands …

I remember those commercials too.

I can’t remember the exact wording, but it went something like, Just a misunderstanding. Nothing to carry a grudge about. All is forgiven. Come home.

It was one of the better television ad campaigns from the '70s. I found a bunch of British Airways commercials on YouTube with Robert Morely, but I couldn’t find that particular one.

I am almost certain it was a print ad.

@Just-B For a few years I watched it on Netflix and but now HBOMax has bought the contract for a few years I’m sure. So that’s where I’ve rewatched it. When a new season comes out I’m at the mercy of where ever I might find it  Sometimes I can catch it on Dailymotion before it gets taken down … otherwise I have to wait until the BBC releases it over here. Usually a year later. I have the same trouble with Call the Midwife.

Ahhh, quite possible. It’s been several decades, so I’m likely conflating the television ads with the print ads that I also saw. I definitely remember what you mentioned about minimizing the American Revolution as nothing but a minor spat between family. It still makes me smile.

I’d gladly pay the BBC to get their programming as it’s released in the UK. As a less-than-avid television watcher, I’m guessing that half my favorite television series have been British.

If it were down to me, I’d have gifted it to you 240 years ago. I spent my early childhood hiding behind cushions on Saturday evenings, in case the Daleks appeared. Scared the living daylights out of every British kid back then. Playground conversation on Monday mornings was always, ‘Did you see…?’

Now, I’m not a fan. It was fantastically innovative in the early decades, now it just seems like every other over-produced sci-fi series.

As an aside, I have a friend who worked in BBC special effects and model-making. He’s built actual daleks. He worked on Dr Who in the late 80s until the original run of series ended in ’89. What a job! He does have some good stories.

US Kids too

Tom Baker was the Doctor of my youth. I remember my Grandfather watching it and I was scared of the Daleks (which I thought he was saying Garlics) and the Doctor lol. I never got much an appreciation for it until The 2nd incarnation. Then I really got the bug and tried to watch as many from the old series as I could find … which weren’t many

I didn’t realise it was so big over there. My ex-wife grew up in Chicago and said it was a real cult thing. Some people absolutely loved it (she was one of them), but most people had never heard of it.

I started watching at the end of John Pertwee era and, like you, most of my watching was Tom Baker, who I liked as the Doctor. However, for me, John Pertwee will always be the real Dr Who. Just like Sean Connery will only ever be the real James Bond.
